Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise Improves Motorist Safety with the IntelliConnect Smart Infrastructure Platform

Florida Turnpike Enterprise's Smart Infrastructure Platform

Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise (FTE) has begun utilizing the IntelliConnect smart infrastructure platform to improve motorist safety. The initial phase of this important work covers a 20-mile section of the Turnpike Mainline and Beachline Expressway in Orlando, and includes a variety of new incident detection, safety messaging, and monitoring services for motorists and traffic management professionals. These services are available for both Connected (CV) and Non-Connected (Non-CV) vehicles and are designed to improve safety and mobility by reducing the number and severity of primary and secondary crashes across Turnpike’s new Smart Roadway System.

The IntelliConnect smart infrastructure platform is designed to facilitate the integration of all existing infrastructure including roadside devices and sensors into a single unified operational view. FTE can now connect and monitor emerging CV equipment (RSU’s and IVP-hub devices), current traffic management infrastructure (LiDARs, Cameras, Radars, and other sensors), additional ITS devices (VMS, DMS, VSL and other electronic signage), new and existing data sources (in-house and 3rd party), and software applications (custom and commercial) to improve incident detection and distribute timely safety messages to motorists and traffic management professionals. These safety messages will assist motorists in making informed driving decisions while also supporting traffic management professionals in selecting and modifying incident response plans.

An added essential feature of the IntelliConnect platform is real-time monitoring of all device and data communication along with continual reporting on the health of all connected devices. A critical function of these connected devices is to provide incident detection enhancements that encompass but are not limited to the detection of wrong-way driving, speed variations, disabled or stopped vehicles, and congestion or traffic queues. In addition to incident detection, safety messages are immediately selected and targeted to specific locations using the dynamic geofencing capability in the IntelliConnect platform.

The IntelliRoad division of Kyra Solutions is delivering the next generation of roadway safety services using its IntelliConnect platform to ensure that transportation agencies can connect existing, new, and emerging technologies. This redefinition of “connected” facilitates the introduction of new services by future-proofing investments in emerging technology while simultaneously leveraging existing infrastructure. Together, FTE and IntelliRoad are building a smarter roadway system that ensures greater mobility and improved safety for all.
